Snowballs and Fringe in the Dining Room

Saturday, April 25, 2020

Snowballs and I go way back.  Not the kind you form from freshly fallen snow, but the kind that grows on branches.

For as long as I can remember, my momma had a snowball bush growing just outside her kitchen window.  A bright and sunny window that welcomed the afternoon sunlight ... a cheerful spot that could turn a most ordinary day into a breath of fresh air.  I loved doing dishes in momma's kitchen, that says a lot right there.  I have so many memories of momma's snowball bush full of blooms in springtime, and the sun filled window making a rainbow of colors that danced in the soapy dishwater.  Mostly, it was momma making this time special...and I still enjoy washing dishes in her sink beneath the sunny kitchen window...even though the snowball bush is long gone.

So, I made sure to plant two in my garden and the memories flood back every spring as they bloom in my garden and I bring them indoors to enjoy, like these in the dining room.

Knock Outs and More Favorites

Thursday, June 25, 2015

Roses have always been one of my garden favorites.
Though finicky and magnets for pests and disease...there is just no other flower quite like the rose.

As years pass,
our property becomes more shaded,
so there are fewer roses in my garden,
but oh how they steal the show.

Changing Up the Kitchen Island

Wednesday, June 3, 2015

A while back I shared about the bunny garden pot holder I got for my birthday, Bunnies in the Farmhouse Kitchen.  They are super cute and it's been fun alternating plants, now they are holding one of my favorites, rabbit's foot fern.

The bunnies are still on the island, I just slid them over to the other side to make way for some beauties I brought in from the garden.

A Favorite Place

Thursday, May 28, 2015

If you drop by to see me in the spring or summer

you'll more than likely find me in the garden,

one of my favorite places to be!

Sometimes You Need a Little "Me" Time

Wednesday, May 13, 2015

Just after placing the Boston fern on a hook and giving it a spray of water, I headed back in the house.

Once in the kitchen I looked out the window and noticed a house finch landing on the fern.  She began bathing in the droplets of water; it was the sweetest thing to watch!

After her bath, she nestled herself into the fern as if to take a nap, so I headed for my camera.

A little bath.  Settling in for a nap.  So sweet.

Once back with my camera I took a few pictures of the sleeping finch, which seemed to be all alone.

When Nature Needs a Helping Hand

Saturday, May 9, 2015

Every year we hope for a brood or two of bluebirds.
We have two houses for them, but each year other birds take up residence in at least one of them.

I shared in Spring in the Garden and Babies Too that this spring chickadees had claimed one of the houses, and yesterday I noticed there was a lot of activity going on.  Thinking the babies must be leaving the nest, I went to get my camera.

After positioning myself close enough to get some shots with my zoom lens I snapped a few pictures
and when checking the exposure I noticed nature was needing a hand.  This chickadee was in distress.

Bunnies in the Farmhouse Kitchen

Thursday, May 7, 2015

We had a little time before our dinner reservations
so we strolled through a few shops.

My mister knows me well.
He spied this bunny garden pot holder and asked if I wanted it for my birthday.
Well, yes...I think it's adorable!

Once home, I had the perfect spot for it in my farmhouse style kitchen, on the island.

The spring flowers have been gorgeous this year
and I've really enjoyed bringing them indoors to use in centerpieces for the keeping room.

Spring Garden and Babies Too!

Sunday, April 26, 2015

This is such a beautiful time of year.

The sights, sounds and smells are wonderful.

It's the perfect time to take a stroll through the garden to see what's blooming.

I admire the flowers while Ellie-Mae hopes to see something she can chase.

Easy-Peasy No Cost Centerpiece

Wednesday, April 22, 2015

I've been trying to keep my spring decorating simple,

easy-peasy,

with little to no cost.

So I wanted to share another quick centerpiece I came up with for the keeping room table.

Little to No Cost Spring Decorating ~ A Southern Magnolia and Clematis Centerpiece

Tuesday, April 14, 2015

I've been wanting to change the centerpiece in the keeping room
and with the white clematis in bloom and plenty of southern magnolia leaves to gather,
my plan was to bring some outdoors in for this centerpiece.

There was one little problem, rain!

It's been raining and raining and according to the weather forecast it's going to continue through Friday.  I didn't want to wait that long, so with an umbrella in one hand and my pruners in the other, I headed outside.

Spring Flowers on the Southern Porch

Thursday, April 9, 2015

With the longer days and warmer temperatures here lately, it's been nice spending time out on the porch.

No longer grabbing a coat to let the pup out and encouraging her to "hurry", I just sit on the porch and rock.

While rocking I noticed the pansies that I planted in the urns last fall were getting leggy,

and I still had my fall wreaths on the front doors,

so I headed out to get some spring flowers for this southern front porch!

Spring Vignette in the Keeping Room

Friday, April 3, 2015

Spring is like a welcomed breath of fresh air!

The sun is shining,
temperatures are warm,
birds are singing and building their nests,
trees are bursting with new green leaves,
and flowers are blooming.
I do love spring!

I've gathered a few things for a spring vignette in the keeping room, like this Haviland France Limoges tea cup with its delicate rose pattern, the perfect resting place for a bird and its nest.

Spring Kitchen Island

Thursday, April 2, 2015

It's bright and cheerful in the kitchen.
Since adding spring touches to the mantel in the keeping room, more have been added in the kitchen.
On the island I've used gifts from friends, the bunny a gift from one and the tray a gift from another.

A Celebration & Happy Spring!

Saturday, March 21, 2015

Happy first day of SPRING!

It's a bit cold and rainy here today on the first official day of spring, but that's alright.  The weather was perfect on Tuesday when our family gathered to celebrate a very special breast cancer survivor.

It was St. Patrick's Day 2012 when mother received her breast cancer diagnosis
and the family got together on her three year anniversary date to celebrate mom and how thankful we are for her.

Spring on the Vent Hood ~ Before and Afters

Wednesday, March 18, 2015

I knew one of the things I would enjoy about the new kitchen was being able to decorate the vent hood.  I was a little surprised when I noticed that since Thanksgiving, when we actually moved back in, it has already been decorated three different times.

It's been fun adding spring touches to the kitchen and I have just added some to the vent hood, so I thought I'd share some before and afters.

As a kitchen warming present, our daughter gave us this rooster clock, the first thing used to decorate the vent hood.

Spring Mantel in the Keeping Room

Friday, March 13, 2015

There is something to be said for all the seasons,
each beautiful in its own way,
but there is something extra special about SPRING!

Awakening,
new life,
bright and beautiful,
sweet smells,
beauty for the eyes to behold,
anticipation.

Not only do I love this season, but it's the first spring for decorating in the keeping room!

Spring's a Darling!

Friday, March 6, 2015

Is there any season we look forward to more than Spring?

It's my favorite season,
and though each brings something special,
there is none I look more forward to than Spring!

After a long winter of cold weather, ice and snow,
just the thought of warm weather being right around the corner makes me happy,
so I'm thinking Spring!

I Can't Help Myself!

Friday, March 14, 2014

Spring isn't officially here, but I can't help myself...
I have the fever!

The daffodils are blooming...

The leaves on the maple trees are ready to burst...

And the birds are in abundance!
When the feeders are full I just can't help myself, I have to get closer...

The Black Capped Chickadee...

Female Downy Woodpecker...

and the Doves, I love to hear their song...

The American Robin...

Look at those eyes (spooky)...

Tufted Titmouse...

The female Purple Finch.
Similar to the House Finch but this bird has prominent white eyebrows and is usually only seen in the Carolina's during the winter months...

Here are a few of their songs for you to enjoy...

The Tufted Titmouse...

Black Capped Chicadee, one of my favorites with songs so sweet..

When the feeder is covered in birds, I just can't help myself, it's so much fun watching them!
Do you have the fever too?
