Fall in the Guest Room & Remembering

Tuesday, October 1, 2019

One of my favorite rooms in our colonial farmhouse style home is the downstairs guest bedroom.
I call it "Aunt Janie's" room because this is the room she always stayed in when she would come to visit.  Funny, her daughter is how the decor choices for this room came together.  Many years ago, my cousin gave me two pictures she no longer wanted, so I brought them home and everything from the paint colors to the drapes all came together from the colors and patterns in those two pictures.

Thrifty Find for Guest Room and Cleaning Soiled Shades

Wednesday, December 7, 2016

There we were my daughter and I, spending a nice afternoon together and strolling through a quaint second hand shop with no intent on making any purchases.  We were talking and laughing while gazing at the goodies all around us.  We do this often and most of the time we don't spend a dime.  Well, this day was different.

As I rounded the corner my eyes were drawn to a pair of lamps with hand painted pink and green flowers and then I was drawn to the dangling sales tag where "$19 each" was boldly written.
$19 each!?

Changes in the Guest Room

Friday, January 22, 2016

It is cold here in North Carolina.  Yesterday we had a little sleet and snow, today it is sunny and in the mid 40's, however tomorrow is when the fun is to begin.  The forecast for Friday is 28 degrees with freezing rain and Saturday 37 degrees with s-n-o-w.  I hope so!  I would like at least one good snow this winter.  I understand that might seem a bit silly to those of you who live with that white stuff all winter long; but we don't get a good snow often so it's a treat when we do!

Enough about the weather, let's get on to the changes in the guest room...

Toile in the Guest Room

Wednesday, November 25, 2015

Company was coming and I was on a mission to free up some extra closet and drawer space in the guest rooms.  The upstairs guest room got a major redo last summer, going from dark brown walls to light walls and new white bedding too; it looks so much better now.

When redoing this room I had planned on reupholstering the vanity stool, but I forgot about it.   We don't use this room unless company is coming and when cleaning the house it would briefly come to mind again, but I would move on to the next room to clean.  I guess it was a case of out of sight, out of mind.

Here's a glimpse of how the guest room looked before:

Ugly Duckling Turned Beautiful Swan ~ I Had My Doubts

Thursday, November 12, 2015

It was a long, long time ago when I found her; an old dresser abandoned by the roadside.
The drawer fronts were not attached to the drawers and leaning against one side.
The old mirror and frame that holds it in place were dismantled and leaning on the other side.
She was old, broken and dirty...the perfect curbside find.

The mister reattached the drawer fronts to the drawers and after a good cleaning she was used for storage in a spare room at our old house.  Jumping ahead a number of years and after moving to our current home, the base of the dresser was used on the screened porch for a while and for the last couple of years it has been stored in the garage.

As I shared in my Guest Room Sneak Peek, I was searching the attic, garage and all my stashes to pull this room together with little to no cost.  This dresser came to mind and as I pulled her from the garage, seeing the condition it was in, I had my doubts about ever using it again.

She looks awful here, but just wait! :)

Colonial Farmhouse Guest Room Reveal

Thursday, November 5, 2015

It's been fun pulling the guest room together and it's finally finished!

I wanted this room to feel warm and cozy with colonial farmhouse touches.  I also wanted to furnish it by shopping the house; spending as little as possible by using what I already have and hoping it comes together well.

I didn't paint the room or purchase curtains.  The walls were already a pale yellow with red drapes hanging, so that was my starting point; bright walls and curtains in my favorite color...red!

Silver Dish Turned Candle Holder in the Guest Room

Wednesday, October 28, 2015

It all started while searching for a few things to use in the guest room.

I was out and about,
searching for a little of this and that,
when I spotted a small silver serving dish missing the glass insert.

Priced at just a few bucks, I knew just what to use it for.

Guest Room Progress

Thursday, October 22, 2015

The guest room, turned office, is being turned back to a guest room again.

I want this room to feel warm and cozy, so I'm adding colonial farmhouse style furnishings and accessories.  There's been a lot of progress since I shared the Guest Room Sneak Peek with you;
the cupboard is finished and a few new finds have been added too!

Guest Room Sneak Peek and a Mini-Makeover Project

Wednesday, September 23, 2015

She's a guest room again!
The mister has moved his home office so this room is being dressed for guests.

A colonial farmhouse style guest room sounds warm, cozy and is the look I'm going for.  I've been searching the attic, garage and all my stashes to keep with my low to no cost decorating goal and I have a few quilts, antiques and primitives in mind.

Here's a guest room sneak peek and also a mini-makeover project I'm working on.

Tweaks in the Guest Room

Friday, August 1, 2014

Having just shared the Guest Room Reveal I was a little surprised to be tweaking this room already.
Actually, I couldn't believe this change didn't come to mind earlier.

Are you like me,
you get used to something being in a certain place for so long that it never dawns on you to move it?

Such is the case with the love seat being in front of the guest room window.
It has been there for a long time and I was used to it being there,
but it's time to move.

Guest Room Reveal

Saturday, July 26, 2014

Recently I shared a sneak peek of the updated guest room which shows what the room looked like before and today I'm sharing the reveal.

Most rooms in our home evolve over time and I'm sure this one will be tweaked here and there, but for now it's finished and I couldn't be happier with the way it turned out.

Guest Bedroom Sneak Peek

Thursday, July 24, 2014

We've been getting so much rain.

I'm not complaining, it's nice having a green lawn in late July, but cloudy skies make it hard to take pictures of the guest bedroom.

So today when the sun finally decided to come out for a few minutes,
I snapped a some pictures to share a sneak peek of the updated room with you.

Here is how it looked before...

The walls and ceiling were two different shades of brown.
It was the color our daughter wanted back when she was in high school, which was a long time ago, so updating this room was l-o-n-g overdue!

Revamping the Guest Bedroom

Friday, June 20, 2014

A revamping of the guest bedroom is long overdue.

Red is my favorite color

and when considering other colors for my home

I am always drawn back to it.

There's nothing better than a little inspiration to get us going in the right direction
and these guest rooms are dreamy.
Some with touches of red and some with touches of...well, you'll see.

What's your favorite?...

Red buffalo checks, so nice..

(1)

Love this big ruffly pillow at the foot of the bed and the use of a quilt or two...

(2)

Lots of toile...

(3)

Shiplap walls and red floral fabrics...

(4)

I

DO

LOVE

RED,

and one day I would love to have a guest room that looks like this...

(5)

But

there will be no red

for

this

guest room.

I am thinking about soft hues of french blue.

Maybe a little chippy...

A little soft and refined...

Subtle walls with a few deep hues...

(6)

or French blue everywhere, on the walls and fabrics too...

(7)

(8)

(9)

Maybe a monogram...

(10)

Wallpapered walls with a pop of yellow...

(11)

Simple and sweet...

(12)

Soft and subtle...

(13)

One thing is for sure,

the current brown walls are going away.

Which is YOUR favorite guestroom?

Another Thrifty Find for the Guest Room

Saturday, April 26, 2014

Yesterday, I shared about my new find for the guest room.

While we were at the antique shop getting this...

There was a little something else that caught my eye,
another thrifty find for the guest room.

This old brass chamberstick with candle push up...

Some folks say brass is out of fashion, but not me.

Love brass and especially fond of the push up...

How about you, found any good finds lately and do you like brass?

You can see more here...New Find for the Guest Room.
