The Collected Cabin

Sunday, September 1, 2019

The current remodel work here at the mountain cabin is taking a l-o-n-g time.  This phase is the last of the interior spaces to be done and once finished we will have a master bedroom, master bathroom and laundry area. The end of June our contractor committed to having this complete within four weeks, so I committed to being here full-time ... but they didn't get it finished.  Never ending!

Even though the dining room and most every corner of the cabin has been filled with beds, end tables, dressers, and other things for the new areas, I've been adding touches of fall.  I was enjoying the soft glow of the morning sun streaming in through the window, so I snapped these pictures.

For over a year prior to starting work on the cabin I began gathering extras and searching thrift stores, consignment shops and marketplace for things we would need.  I've learned that purchasing things for the home is much more budget friendly when you do it over time and not at the last minute.  Everything collected or given to us (free is good!) was stored in the living room of our city house.

I remember finding this tole painted lamp.  I loved it...but it was rusty red and trimmed in bright white...so I added some dark wax to deepen the tone.

Along the way I've been collecting Delft tiles to possibly use as the backsplash in the cabin kitchen. Still undecided on this, but while keeping my eye out for tiles I found this sweet little Delft pot.  It is the perfect size for this side table and the flowers add just a bit of yellow for fall.  It's still summer, so I'll wait a while to bring in the deeper fall colors.

She will be a collected cabin, filled with things that have spoken to me and gifts from friends and family.  Some things have already found their place in the cabin, like the tole painted lamp and Delft pot, and I'll be so excited when our fixer-upper is finished and everything is in its place.  I'm trying to enjoy the process of getting the cabin just the way we want it, but I must admit I enjoy the results much more than the process.  Hopefully the current renovation work will be finished soon!

Hope you are having a wonderful Labor Day weekend!

  1. I remember the days of living through never-ending renovations....sigh.... We may have one more project in our future, too, as we try to find the perfect place to make as our final home. Will feel good after 16 moves in our married years.
Can't wait to see your cabin all put together. What fun! xo Diana
