Carpet to Wood ~ Staircase Update

Saturday, October 18, 2014

It's Friday and I have big plans for this weekend,
hopefully I'll get the staircase priming and painting finished!

Here's where we are now...

After removing all the carpet,
carpet tack strips,
staples and nails,
we began removing the paint, filling all the holes and sanding...

If you remember our stair treads and risers are pine,
the type of wood intended to stay underneath carpet, but we decided to see what we can do with it
and were happy to find the front of the treads were bullnose even though the exposed ends are just a straight cut.

When the spindles were originally painted some got on the stair treads so we used paint remover to loosen it up...

There is something special about an entry

It doesn't matter the number of steps...

The Truth is Ugly!

Friday, September 26, 2014

Who doesn't like their home to be pretty,

and clean,

and dust free,

and decorated for the season,

and smelling good?

Truth is...remodeling is just plain u g l y !

Here's the truth about this gut job and it's not pretty...

Truth is,

when gutting your old kitchen and den for a new kitchen

it's thrilling to have a strange man on your roof peeking down at you through a hole...

The New Kitchen Window ~ A Special Place

Saturday, May 31, 2014

As a little girl one of my favorite places in Granny's house was her kitchen.

The sink was just beneath the window and had two sides; one for washing and one for rinsing.  Just outside the window was her beautiful green lawn, flower beds, and large garden which ran all along the fence line.

Hi sweet friends!
Hope you are having a great week, it's been busy here!

DWELLINGS

The front of our house has been going through some changes.

We started with the stone front porch and

once finished we moved on to the double entry doors.

Here is the front of our house before the porch and doors were remodeled...

The foyer was dark,

the storm doors were showing wear,

and we wanted a change that would allow sunlight in to brighten things up…

The Stone Front Porch

Monday, March 11, 2013

Front Porch Columns

Hi Sweet Friends!

The weather was beautiful here this weekend,

we've moved the clocks forward,

and spring is right around the corner...yippee!!!

We have been doing some remodeling around here which has included updating the front porch...

Front Porch Columns

We do love our porch!

It's the perfect place to enjoy an early morning or late afternoon
rocking in the chairs with a cup of coffee or cold lemonade.

Lately though,

we've been noticing more and more loose mortar and chipping tile,

so we knew it was time for some an update.

Front Porch

The current tile is terracotta.

Notice the blue stone behind the planter, this is one of the stones we are considering...

Porch Urns

We knew we wanted stone rather than tile,

and the color scheme we were looking for,

so we visited several stone yards to see what was available...

 Tennessee Gray Flagstone

We chose Tennessee field stone for the front porch walls

and

blue stone for the porch and stair treads.

 Tennessee Gray Dark Flagstone

The order was placed,

the pattern and mortar style were settled upon,

and a few days latter the guys set everything up in the driveway and on the front lawn.

For days they chiseled,

and cut,

and re-chiseled stone.

Matt is the owner and he is sizing up the situation with his right-hand-man…

stone pillars

Originally we had stairs coming straight down from the porch,

so we changed that up a bit by extending the stairs and adding curved wing walls…

It took about a week for them to complete the project.

The stone needs to cure a while before a sealer could be applied so they will come back to do that.

The column trim had to be removed for the stone to be installed and is still missing in these pictures...

Tennessee Blue Stone

We chose a messy mortar look to give the wall an aged look.

As we complete projects on our home we add farmhouse touches,
we wanted it to look as though the stone porch has been here for a very long time.

The carpenter has since come and the column trim is now complete.

Now we are waiting for the warmer days of spring so the stone can be sealed,

hopefully it won’t be long . . . I'm so ready for warm weather!
