KITCHEN CABINETRY~What is YOUR Favorite?

Choosing the kitchen cabinetry is such a big decision!

For a good while now I have been saving inspirational pictures of kitchen cabinets as we plan our remodel.  It will be a total gut job and relocation of the kitchen so if you missed what our current kitchen looks like and the plan for our new kitchen, you can see it here.

With so many cabinetry choices available, it is hard to decide which way to go.  I thought that having a lot of pictures for inspiration would make it easy to decide…nope!

Admire the beauty of yourself too. In real you never grew up, it's maybe your thoughts and surrounding changed. Re-set and get alive again (:

We currently have cherry cabinets and really like them,
so we could go with cherry again or choose another wood.

One GREAT thing about all wood cabinets is that dings or chips can be chalked up as “character” and can easily be filled in with a stain pen, easy peasy!

But is this the right choice?

Maybe we should totally change things up and go All white?  I worry about dents that would leave the wood exposed, and scuff marks and stains that won’t easily wash off which could lead to re-painting the cabinets in a few years…I would dread that!  Maybe custom cabinetry that is professionally sprayed with the white paint are more durable than I think, so I’m worrying about things that really won’t be an issue?

What about a mix of white and wood cabinetry?

Or white cabinetry with a few painted in a different color?

Decisions, decisions, decisions…HELP!

I would so appreciate your thoughts and experience with your cabinetry.  So, if gutting your kitchen and starting all over, which would you choose and why?

Would you choose all white cabinetry…

Maybe we should again go with ALL cherry or other wood species through out…

  1. Even if I had the option, I can't imagine trying to make the choice.

  2. Whew ! I love #1, #18, and #19 but that is at first glance. Were I actually doing this I imagine that on the second day I would pick different things. It has got to be hard! :)

  3. I would definately go WHITE,, its timeless and dont worry about dings or chips. You'd be right in style and not have to destroy-- opps -- I mean Distress:) them.. In time they'll distress themselves lol.. folks will think you did it on purpose and did a great job of it too..

  4. I could stare at kitchens all day. Since my cabinets are a light hickory and are yellowing and getting a little worn...I am leaning towards the white ones. I think image # 2, #6 and #7 are my favorites!

  5. It was so nice to meet you in person at Haven. We had a great time and I am still trying to organize everything we learned. We are already looking forward to next year.
As for the kitchens #2 is my dream kitchen. I love white cabinets but I would do an island in either wood or a different color to offer contrast. They all are beautiful and now days so many choices which makes it that much harder. Good luck!

  6. Oh my, you have some wonderful ideas to choose from, Cindy! I think my first choice would be #10, provided there is plenty of natural light. I really like the look of darker wood with a lighter color island -- so very striking!

  7. Here are my favorites in order: 7, 1, 19 & 11. However, anything you choose is going to look gorgeous! Good luck!

  8. Hi Cindy, I like # 1 and 7. For me, having had stained cabinets for 30 years,I am completely over stain....don't want it ever again. 8 years ago, we had our cabinets professionally painted and glazed (creamy white) and the island is painted black. They still look fabulous - even with frequent visits from 6 grandchildren. Given the choice, I will NEVER have stained cabinets EVER again. Love the light and bright look. Linda

  9. I love the look of white cabinets and the island painted a different, fun color. :) If you get tired of the island color, at least it's just the island that you have to repaint. :) Good luck choosing!

  10. I think all white with maybe a darker island would be my first choice. It really makes the space look bigger, even if I like darker wood tones

  11. #16 absolutely. Love any of the dark ones. Light doesn't hold up well (yellows and stains) and makes the house feel cold in the winter. The dark is rich, I find the white to be cheap and out of current trend (not that I care about that). Dark with black bin pulls, copper sink, dark stone counter, yum! Timeless.

  12. Hi sweet Cindy! Oh, so many gorgeous kitchens you've shown us. Well, I'm just partial to white kitchens but I did like the one with the island in wood and the rest white! Decisions decisions! I know it's hard you'll come up with the right choice.
    Be a sweetie,
    Shelia ;)

  13. If I was starting from scratch with custom cabinets I'd do a lightly distressed off white or glazed white on cabinets and maybe a charcoal for an island. Having a little distressing will make any scratches or dents much less noticeable. You can ask about touch up paint too, from the manufacturer. that would keep having to do it all over again less likely. A reno will be so much work, but how wonderful!!

  14. Definitely one of he toughest decisions to make Cindy! Hence, I ended up choosing 2 types of cabinetry for mine! White and espresso-stained wood! I think whatever you choose would be lovely Cindy since you obviously have excellent tastes. Good luck dear, btw, in my choosing white, I did not think about stains and such, I just wanted them. but you are absolutely right in considering these factors. :-)

  15. Okay, lots of choices here. I like mixing things up, so, I would probably have a combo of painted pieces, and wood pieces.

  16. All of these kitchens are amazingly beautiful! I have a wooden kitchen I love, as before this one it was white...here you have so many ideas and choices!

  17. 1 is my favorite then 7 and 12.

  18. So hard to choose! My new kitchen is white with glaze. I really like it. The island is stained espresso but honestly at some point I might paint it a nice color.

  19. 7 and 9....but I wouldn't be crying over any of them...they are all gorgeous!

  20. All white...it is just always so classic and clean and can always be changed up with accents of color in your dishes, art or appliances....lucky you!-aimee

  21. #1 - #7 - #11. Really they are all fabulous. Can't wait to see what you choose. Hugs, Marty

  22. I love #1- but really like most of them. I do think the two toned-uppers one color-bottoms a 2nd color is a trend and the fad will pass. I do like the island being a different color, too. xo Diana

  23. Love 18, 19 and 21. Notice what is so beautiful in the all white ones??? The wood floors.

I choose maple in a honey tone for my kitchen, it is small with only one window, so I like the light look, but don't like white, too hard to keep up with. You have to judge by how much light your room gets, and what decorative pieces you want to work around, like china, etc. And have some fun!!!

  24. Oh yes, I would choose all white! Love it!! weekly (or however often you would like) you could change pops of color! pops of red - of yellow - of green - of orange - of blue .... so beautiful! all of them are beautiful - but all white? yep - elegant!

  25. Cindy, these are all beautiful kitchens! If I could start over, I would do an off-white or light cream, with just a touch of glazing. In fact, I'm considering it right now!

  26. I like white kitchens, I've been thinking about painting my stained cabinets white, but OH what a job that would be! I'm not a fan of the mixed thing, but that's just me. White keeps the room light and bright by reflecting the light around and you can see what you're doing :) Good luck!

  27. I am a white country kitchen kinda gal! I just posted some before n after pics of our dining room on your party link, but the picture didn't load properly?? anyways, hope you will stop by for a visit and I will be back to post more of our white kitchen. Take care.

  28. I really like the white kitchen you showed. I also love the idea of an island in a different colour, but I wonder if choosing a colour for an island doesn't mean you're then limited as far as decoration goes.

  29. I love #1 and #7, but they all are very pretty! I like white cabinets with an island of a different color. How exciting to embark on a kitchen remodel, good luck!

  30. What a hard choice to make as they are all beautiful! I went back and looked at the pictures of the rest of your house and your existing kitchen, and my thought would be to do an all white kitchen with perhaps a dark painted wood island ... black ... or dark sage green... will look gorgeous with your hard wood floors! Then you will be able to add the punches of color where you want and as the seasons change if you like doing that. You seem to have a lot of different woods throughout your house I don't think I would add another color or kind in the kitchen. I think white cabinets will really brighten up the space beautifully! I can hardly wait to see what you choose!

  31. You've collected some gorgeous examples! I love 18, 19, and 21 with the mixed, eclectic looks. (the all white kitchens are a bit stark for my taste.) I wish I could remodel my kitchen, but I'll have to settle for DIY right now. My cabinets are painted white with nice white molding, but the bottom set gets very stained from coffee drips and other messy things. I think I will use gray milk paint and distress them and leave the top cabinets white. I would never have white bottom cabinets again!

  32. I love all white kitchens - but would consider doing the lower cabinets a bold color with white uppers. How exciting to reno a kitchen!

  33. Although they're all amazing over the top kitchens, I'll go for the Wood kitchens #10 and #13; because before my Wood one we had White and it ended up badly, yellow for one and chipped in the corners and didn't look great. I love Wood anyway, nut I love #10 cause of the different color island.
Good luck with your choice and how exciting...a new KITCHEN!
    Big hugs,

  34. GORGEOUS Cindy! Mine has white cabinets with black granite, white marble counters .. and white marble back splash. The base of the island is dark and the cabinets are white. It's kinda like the examples of the two-toned look you are showing. We are planning to re stain our hardwoods with a darker stain for more contrast with the white. You can't go wrong with any of these examples :)

  35. I adore all white kitchens. I have one myself and would not ever ever do a stained cabinet. I don't mind the bottoms being stained and the tops white too much but still prefer all white. I do like a stained island if the cabinets are all white or having the island a different paint color. I love kitchens 1 and 2 the best.

  36. Oh! No. 1 is my favorite! Your list of options looks a lot like mine did last year. We finally got the remodel done! White cabinets were our choice. Thought about the contrasting island in a darker wood, but went with white after all. Haven't blogged about the remodel, yet, but I plan to soon. Dings on cabinet doors can always be painted is my theory! A good source for online architectural options (decorative appliques, mouldings etc.) is architectural depot. I ordered moulding and corbels and appliques from there, and asked my carpenter to add them on. It worked out fine! We went with an oil base paint for the cabinets to make them more durable and easier to clean. I ordered glass cabinet knobs on ebay! They are so expensive in stores! Have fun and good luck!
