Updates ~ Our Mountain Cabin Fixer Upper

Friday, August 11, 2017

We've been busy as bees so I wanted to share more updates on our mountain fixer upper.  The butterflies have been busy too.  They love the bee balm flowers that are still blooming.  I didn't think they would last so long but are still going strong.

I mentioned in the last update that our general contractor has a lengthy list of things to do and repairing drywall that was damaged during the electrical rewiring is part of that list.  To get things ready for all the workers and dust we cleared everything from the rooms and packed our air mattress away so we could cover the hardwood floors with construction paper to protect them.  One of the first things done was refinishing the pine hardwood flooring and we don't want them to get scuffed or damaged.  There is nothing hard about putting paper down and taping it, but it did take a long time!

In the largest bedroom, there is insulation to be replaced, holes to be patched and whole sections of wall needing new drywall.

The small bedroom needs new insulation, holes repaired and walls covered with drywall too.

We are patching holes in walls and then my mister goes and cuts a huge hole in this one?  It's for a good reason.

About 12 years ago I was driving through a neighborhood and on the side of the road was this 1920's telephone niche leaning against a trash can.  I went back and got it but never could find a good place for it in my home, so it has been in the garage all this time, but no more!  I've found the perfect place for it.

The niche will make a cute shelf in the wall just as you enter the small bedroom.

She (and the wall) looks a little rough around the edges right now, but I'll make them pretty!

Having the doors open so we can hear the creek sure makes the work more fun.  We also take breaks to sit on the porch and watch the hummingbirds and butterflies enjoying the bee balm.

Our general contractor is patching the drywall damage from the electrical rewiring,
installing new drywall in the kitchen,
new gutters and downspouts,
replacing a sagging beam in between the living and dining area,
installing a couple of new windows,
installing interior and exterior doors,
and we are working on the kitchen design and cabinet choices.

Follow along to see how she turns out...see it all right here.

  2. Aww...Cindy!!! You are beginning to come down home row! Love the old telephone niche you found and the whole place is going to be just wonderful when all is said and done. I bet those floors look really great. We always put the rosin paper down, too, to protect our floors-just as a caution if you haven't used it before...make sure something doesn't break the surface and get underneath the paper--you can get some big gouges if nails, etc., happen to go undiscovered. Don't ask me how I know that. I always sweep the rosin paper at the end of the work day.
Hope you have a blessed weekend- xo Diana

  4. Oh wow, you're making GREAT progress! Love how you rescued that niche and look how it's paying you back - it's perfect! So cool to have the creek right there, and the hummers and flowers. That makes the work so much more enjoyable. Happy for you.
