Here's How I Did It...

As promised when sharing about Hiding the Black Box and looking for a cost effective solution,

here's how I used a vintage picture to hide the TV and fireplace.

Turning the black boxes from this...

To this ...

and this...

Here's how I did it...

Our widescreen TV has two handhold openings on the back, there is one on each side.

You'll see in a bit how these openings on the back side are used to hang the picture on the front side....

This is my thrifty find, spent all of $9...yip, yip!
It doesn't have a frame...

On the back side of the picture,

on both the left and right sides,

considering the size of my picture and the location of the handholds on the back of the TV,

I measured in 3" from the side and down 6" from the top, marking the spot...

A plastic serrated knife was used to score the cardboard backing of the vintage picture,

from the top all the way down to the marked spot...

Then on a sheet of wax paper a plastic knife was used to mix a two-part epoxy glue...

Using two precut strips of ribbon about 12" long,

the ribbon was placed on both of the scored lines,

the plastic knife was used to scoop the mixed glue off the wax paper,

and then each ribbon was covered with glue allowing a little to overlap onto the cardboard backing...

About 30 minutes later, once the glue was completely dry,

I held the picture on the front side of the TV to decide where it should hang.

Once determined, I draped the ribbon over to the back side of the TV so it would hang over the handhold and noted where the ribbon touched the top of it.

This is where the picture hanger will be placed on the ribbon so it can be hooked...

The measurement was 7" from the top of the picture to the top of the handhold,

so I tied a large picture hanger on each ribbon at the 7" spot...

All done!

So how do I hang it?

I hold the picture up high so the ribbons with picture hangers can fall behind the TV.

Then lowering the picture in front of the TV towards its proper spot,
I move to the right side and reach back for the ribbon and hook the picture hanger to the handhold opening.

Still holding the picture, I move over to the left side of the TV and reach back for the ribbon and hook the picture hanger to the handhold opening.

If you look close you can see the ribbon at the top of the picture on the left and right sides
looping over to the back of the TV...

You can see them better here...

When we want to watch TV,
I simply hold the picture in the center at the bottom,
lifting it up a bit to release tension on the ribbon,
then I reach back to unhook one side and then move over to unhook the other side.

When not on the TV the picture is used to cover the other black box,

our fireplace...

All that's needed for this is a large picture easel...

How about you,
thought about ways to cover your black boxes?

Hope you are having a great week!

  1. Morning, Cindy! Oh, you are the smartest one! What a great way to hide the big black box! I would never have thought of this! It looks great and the artwork looks great in front of your fireplace. Isn't it amazing how it's the exact size for both? You did good! Have a blessed weekend.

  4. Your solution is perfect!!! I love what you did and would copy it myself if my HH wouldn't get upset with me for covering his TV. :-) It's a wonderful thing you've done, though. Thanks for sharing your awesome-ness. :-)
    Blessings!

  5. How very clever! I hid my tv (it's an old box type) in the living room closet! We just open the door when we want to watch a video. We don't have t.v. reception.
