Walls Come Tumbling Down...

Saturday, June 28, 2014

To ensure our home remains whole

and

no walls come tumbling down on top of us,

a steel beam is required to keep the second floor

on the second floor!

The wall that used to separate the old kitchen from the new kitchen area was removed
and temporary walls were built to support the second story until the beam could be installed.

The beam was delivered to the front side yard, literally dropped off the truck.

The guys had to figure out a way to get it from the front side yard to the back deck,

which is a long way with quite a few corners to turn...

They figured the best way to save their backs was to roll it...

There was a lot of grunting as the guys began lifting the beam through the window...

And there were great sighs of relief once the beam was safely on the floor!

There was no way they could lift the beam,

and keep holding it there until it was secured,

so in came this thingamajig...

By turning a hand crank this thingamajig lifted the beam,

while the guys maneuvered it into place.

Now it's secure, this beam isn't going anywhere...

When we converted our upstairs area Mr. Heart started something that I thought was really special.
When we begin a new project in our home he places our initials and the date on things that will be tucked away in the walls...

Who knows if or when anyone will ever find them,

but we know it's there...

I am often asked where we in the kitchen renovation so here's a little update...

Many of the materials have been purchased; the sinks, faucets, and appliances.
Still trying to decide on the light fixtures, tile, cabinetry knobs, etc...

The guys are adding the final trim details and painting the outside of the new kitchen window.

The new footers to support the beam walls are scheduled to be installed.

We have an appointment tomorrow with our cabinet maker tomorrow to finalize details.

Then we still need the...
lighting plan,
electrical,
plumbing,
sheet rock,
to install the flooring, etc...
September, will you ever get here?!

Thanks so much for following along, hope you are having a GREAT week!

  3. A looong process, understandably, and what a job! I really like that thingamajig! We have several steel beams in our home in its original construction - most notably in the sunroom, below the entire ceiling/roof of windows. Love seeing your update, CIndy.

  4. I get so nervous watching things like this! When they installed huge columns on my porch, I had to go inside.
And I love your secret message in your house!

How exciting getting a new kitchen...I know you must be having a blast planning it. Like how you wrote a message (my hubs and girls do the same thing around here).

    Blessings,
