It's Gonna Get Dusty!

Wednesday, January 8, 2014

It's about to get dusty!

This is our great room.
There used to be a pool table in here with stools for resting while playing a game of pool, a few chairs for TV viewing, and also a desk with a computer.  This room has been my YUCK room, really ugly with popcorn ceilings and dark paneling, you can see the before here.

Once the kids moved out on their own the pool table and stools were given away, the room was painted and it has evolved into this...

It looks much better now than it did.
When we have all the family over to eat the glass top table is used for extra seating.
There are lounge chairs for Mr. Heart when he wants to watch a ball game if I'm watching something else in the den, but we still don't use this room very often.

Our den is where we gather when guests come to visit and the place we spent most of our leisure time.  It is located up a couple of stairs from the great room and on the other side of the kitchen.

We don't need a den and a great room so we've decided that our current den and small kitchen will soon become our NEW farmhouse style kitchen (yippee!) and the great room will be the main room we gather in for visiting, relaxing, and watching TV.

To get things rolling we first need to clear out the great room so new hardwood flooring can be installed and then we can begin the demo of the old den and kitchen areas for the new kitchen!

This is what the great room looked like a few months ago...

This is how it looks now.
The closet shelving has been torn out and Mr. Heart is sizing up the sub-floor situation...

All the furniture has been removed and is stacked up in the living room.
The current sub-floor is MDF so it has to be removed and replaced with the proper sub-flooring so the hardwoods can be installed, a back breaking job for Mr. Heart.

All the wiring for the computers and television had to be relocated.  Mr. Heart is under the house waiting on me, but I had to snap a picture of Ellie-Mae!  She goes crazy when she hears Mr. Heart's voice coming from underneath the house but cannot see him...it's so funny to watch her!

The furniture is gone,
the curtains are down,
the wiring relocated,
the sub-floor has been removed,
and today the wood is being delivered.
The wood will have a few days to acclimate to the temperature of our home before Thursday's installation, then there will be several days of sanding and sealing.

(we pulled the carpeting back up to help keep as much warmth in the room as possible),

Guess what we found in the process of tearing up the carpet?
Remnants of the earlier carpet in our 1973 home, can you guess what it looked like?

It was built in 1973 so just one guess!

Yes, it was orange shag carpet!

I am so thankful to be getting this done, but I do wish I could leave and come back once it's all finished!

  1. Oh Cindy, what a HUGE undertaking! It's mind-blowing how one remodel dominoes into SO much more. I hope you have plastic sheets hanging and taped to keep that dust down to a minimum! I just know it's going to be fabulous in the end, and that alone keeps a heart light. Bet you can't wait until Friday, when the floor is finished (hopefully) being installed there!

  2. I love hardwood floors, so I can't wait to see your room all finished. I laughed out loud when I saw the orange shag! When I was growing up my parents bought a new house that had wall to wall orange shag all over the beautiful wood floors. The owner was so proud she had them professionally cleaned right before the closing and my parents didn't have the heart to tell her, there first project was to rip all that carpeting out. ;)

  6. Hi Cindy! Oh, this is exciting and I'm so glad for you. Sounds like you're really on your way now. How nice Mr. Heart can do some of the work himself! Can't wait to see it all. Take three deep breaths and cover your nose to protect it from dust and you'll be fine! ;)

  30. Oh, how well I remember going through all of this in our previous home. You just have to grit your teeth and muddle through, Cindy. The "pain" will be worth it when it's all finished! I really thought the old carpet color was going to be green -- also very popular in the 70's, but no less horrible!
