MASTER REMODEL

Wednesday, March 30, 2011

Our home is older and over the 10 years we have lived here we've done alot of updating.  Painting, wallpaper, brazillian cherry floors, scraping popcorn ceillings, etc.  It is now time to REMODEL...especially the master suite and kitchen.  The first will be the master.

This being our first tear-out and total remodel, I must confess I didn't realize how long just the planning process would take!

On my previous post MASTER REMODEL I shared the layout of our current master bath and the need to relocate my walk-in closet.
We completed our new walk-in master closet by combining Mr. Hearts closet and a small office area and it turned out perfectly!

This was the master bath layout...
Below is now the current bath layout and it's ready for demolition!

The hardest part of this remodel is deciding where to put what!!!
The current window is throwing us a curve because it is not where we would want it in our new design.
Trying to leave the window as is and designing around it is proving difficult.  However, we aren't sure we want to close in this window for fear of how the back view of the house will look if the new mortar and patching doesn't end up matching well with the current brick and mortar.
Decisions, decisions, decisions...

We are leaning toward:
--Dark Cherry Cabinetry  --Carerra Marble --Polished Nickle Hardware & Fixtures.

There are some beautiful bathrooms to draw inspiration from and these were found through a Google bathroom search.

 So, what do you think?
Which is your favorite?

Blessings,

  5. Those are some beautiful "inspiration" bathroom photos. I will be very anxious to see what you come up with. I love how you set up the new closet. Our new home has a pretty nice master walk-in, but with a lot of untapped potential, so I'm looking for ideas. I'm really racking up the projects for The Man & we haven't even moved in yet. LOL!!!

  6. I love them all, Cindy, and it's hard to choose. Let me say that we have that square Kohler pedestal sink in two baths in the St. Augustine house, and I like it because it has a fairly large ledge where you can place cosmetics. The other bath has a tiny pedestal sink that has no ledge, making it a little hard to put on makeup in there. It's tight. We don't have a medicine cabinet in either of the downstairs baths, so I keep things like that in nearby hanging cabinets. We do, however, have a medicine cabinet upstairs in St. A which is original to the house.

In my actual home, I have the same (pededstal sinks), only I have oblong pedestal sinks I purchased nearly twenty years ago from Renovator's Supply catalog. They are very goodlooking. There are closets in those baths which makes it nice. In the master bath, we also have a long sink cabinet that I love because it has drawers and cabinets under the sink for cleaning supplies plus a linen closet for extra storage. It was installed by the previous owner, and I would probably have done a more expensive cabinet... but it's there, and it functions and looks okay. :-)

I love both tubs in the photos. I have had in other houses a clawfoot and one of the "pedestal" tubs for lack of a better word, and I like them a lot. But I prefer showers to baths, so I didn't use them a lot. Those nice handles make it better. I adore that handsome antique cabinet in the bathroom, but I would worry incessantly about the finish on it being ruined from steam, moisture, etc.

I have neat hooks for towels for guests, but I also have a little prayer chair (antique) where i stack towels in the upstairs bath in St. Augustine.

One thing I read years ago from a famous designer is that it's better to have lights on either side of your mirror than over the top. It makes for better lighting that is evenly balanced. I keep thinking that if I build a house someday, I will do that. But I did do that in both downstairs baths in St. Augustine, and I prefer it. I used nautical (outdoor) lights in the baths because I figured if they could work outside, they would be fine in a bath where there's moisture.

    Hope this helps.

    XO,

    Sheila :-)

  10. Hi Cindy,
You have found some great bathroom inspiration to draw from. I love those fat yummy bathtubs! Especially the one with the fat feet as well, the 5th photo down, that's my favorite. They are all gorgeous!

  11. We have a very, very small bathroom we're hoping to remodel. It has a window that is in the way - we're considering covering it up partially - leaving the top visible - perhaps working it so it still looks good from the outside - just covering up with a wall.
Hope you have fun - :)

  12. I'm partial to baths with standing furniture rather than built-ins. Love the room with the tall cupboard and the squarish white tub. I'd love to have a renovation too! Good luck with yours!

Are you and your husband doing the work yourselves or are you having it done? With all the samples you've shown us I think your bathroom will turn out wonderful...my favorite is they yellow bathroom and the two under it. Sorry I couldn't just name one...you had too many good choices! We should be finished our renovation today and I can hardly wait. 27. I guess I would have to say the bathroom with the antique chest with the huge venetian mirror over it was one of my favorites!

  28. Wow! You have chosen some great inspiration! So hard to pick a favorite. Thinking I like the big nubby clawfoot, the furniture style cabinet w/taseel, the flooring in the next to last photo and the door in the last photo. How's that for a mix? Can't wait to see what you come up with!

  29. Cindy,
What gorgeous bathrooms you have here. I like a lot of them but, the one that really seem to stand out was the fourth one. They are all beautiful! Can't wait to see your results. Thanks for linking up!

  31. Personally, I like number 5. I love the style of the tub with the hardwood cabinet. I wonder how many of us use our tubs. We lived in a home for 4 years that had a jacuzzi tub and I didn't use it once. So, I guess for me it's about the look of a tub but the function of the shower is probably more practical.

Thanks for sharing your French Inspiration.

  41. I love the yellow and white narrow bathroom. We have a 100 yr. old house with a very similar bathroom, except the walls are painted red! Yes, a soft yellow with white would be an improvement!
Best of luck with your remodel.

  47. Hi Cindy!
    Gorgeous images to choose from.
Your remodel project will be a huge hassle, but so worth it in the end. My husband was up for it but he couldn't stop commenting on how much better it was in the end and why we hadn't tackled it sooner!

You spend so much time there every day so it should be a pretty, functional and relaxing space, right?!

Have fun. It's so worth it once it is done!
Can't wait to see how it turns out.

  48. Ah, a great big tub where I can soak and relax. Sounds like a dream! Could you put the tub in the area where the closet was with a comfy chair beside it. In my last house I had a fireplace in the bathroom and a whirlpool tub.. .and my workout equipment. It was heavenly!
